Every morning on 15th August, when the tri-colour unfurls, it sprinkles in the air patriotism, positivity, and peace. The flutter of the Indian flag on the Independence Day, flashes in our minds the reminiscence of the historic freedom struggle and our hearts reach out to the martyrs. Such is the power of the tri-colour. And, this power of patriotism was also witnessed at Global Indian International School Surat (GIIS) on the Independence Day.

The patriotic songs which were playing in the background, enraptured the students and the teachers alike. The NCC student-cadets marched the school principal Dr. N.K.P Ashok Raj and Khushi Patel of class 7, to the flagstaff for flag hoisting. Khushi is the second student who enrolled for admission to GIIS Surat when the school began operations six years ago! As part of the school’s tradition, the first batch of students are invited to become the chief guest and hoist the flag on every Independence Day.

The programme began with patriotic song by class V students, followed by an inspirational speech by teachers, remembering the heroes like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Subash Chandra Bose, to name a few. The dance performance by class VII on ‘Vande Mataram’ added to the patriotic spirit.

Besides, every class made beautiful flags out of craft papers, sang patriotic songs, and class teachers told students about the British rule and our freedom struggle. Lastly, the principal extended his wishes for the Independence Day, and said, “Our Independence is invaluable and students are the future of our country. We should also be free from social evils like casteism, discrimination and inequality, and, work for women empowerment.”

The Independence Day celebrations were concluded with special lunch for all the students in the school cafeteria.
