Students of GIIS Smart Campus Hadapsar celebrate Earth Day

Students of GIIS Smart Campus Hadapsar learned about ways they can contribute to protecting our planet when they celebrated Earth Day on 22nd April 2022.

The Earth Day celebration is part of the school’s robust Green Initiative Programme and I-care activities which among other things focuses on climate change, global warming and encouraging sustainability. It is also a step in the right direction for a school which is a signatory to the UN Sustainable Development Goals since last year.

Earth Day is celebrated on the 22nd of April every year. It originated in the year 1970. It was first observed in the United States, in order to raise awareness of various environmental issues.

This Day is celebrated to show kindness to our mother earth and any simple measure that we take towards protecting our planet will have a huge impact. The children of GMP participated in simple hands-on activities and shared their experiences.

The teacher explained to the children the significance of Earth Day through stories with morals, songs, and rhymes that threw light on how to limit the use of lights, how to save water, how to reuse and recycle things, reduce pollution, plant more and more trees & how to protect the environment, restore damaged ecosystems and live a more sustainable life. The kindergarteners were explained about five elements of which our planet is made which include Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space.

To boost the tree planting and recycling drive, children were asked to bring used tetra packs which were converted to pots by sowing seeds of coriander, fenugreek, etc.

Meanwhile, the students of Grades 1 to 5 were enlightened about the various ways to conserve Earth which included the 3 R’s – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

Students of Grade 1 took part in the craft activity of making Mother Earth while students of Grade 2 colored Mother Earth and wrote two things that harm the Earth and ways to protect the Earth.

Students of Grade 3 made paper bags while students of Grade 4 made a bird feeder using ice-cream sticks followed by students of Grade 5 who presented a  short skit on 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) & Poster Making (Spread Awareness about Earth)

Throwing light on the activities of the secondary section, students of Grade 6 shared their ideas about various techniques of rainwater harvesting and protecting marine life through interesting comic strips.  Students of Grade 7 made innovative water sprinklers and also demonstrated the use of the same. Meanwhile, students of Grade 8 made bird feeders using cartons and other reusable objects.

Thought-provoking posters highlighting the awareness and significance of Earth Day were made by the students of Grade 9.  Students of Grade 10 displayed their creativity by making a terrarium.

The attractive artistic work by students was not only pleasing to the eyes but also gave them insights into our beautiful planet.
