Impeccable observations, a thoroughly science-y affair!-GIIS Nagpur's visit to Raman Science Centre

Not every Thursday feels like an adventure. However, for the Grade 9 students of GIIS, Nagpur, it was a day  full of wonder and discovery. With a perfect blend of curiosity and enthusiasm, the students set off on a field visit that promised to be anything but ordinary. It was a day when textbooks paved the way to hands-on exhibits, and learning took on an entirely new meaning.

The destination? The renowned Raman Science Centre, Nagpur. And what unfolded was the kind of learning that textbooks cannot capture and worksheets can’t replicate!

The visit began from the moment students stepped inside. The Raman Science Centre is home to a wide range of science models and exhibits spread across multiple galleries, and the grade 9 cohort of GIIS Nagpur made the most out of every single one. The energy in the air was at an all-time high; students moved eagerly from one exhibit to the next, each discovery sparking new questions and discussions.

From physics to human anatomy, from sound and light to earth sciences — everything came together under one roof. The students were intrigued by optical illusions that made them question their senses, traced the path of reflected light using mirrors, and experienced first-hand the effect of sound resonance, rather than merely reading about it. The human skeleton transformed from a black-and-white sketch into a real-life observation. Interactive models on electricity and magnetism further deepened their understanding, and the latest discoveries in modern science rounded off the tour — creating a lot of curiosity in the minds of students.

The key reason why the Raman Science Centre left such a strong impression is that it actively encouraged students to interact with the exhibits. Nothing was locked behind glass or guarded by a ‘Do Not Touch’ sign; instead, students were free to press, pull, observe, and question. Through this process, they began to realise that science does not necessarily happen in classrooms — it is everywhere!

That feeling when something you have only ever read about finally comes alive before your eyes — this is exactly what the trip set out to deliver, and by all indications, it succeeded.

Never restricted by the syllabus!!

GIIS Nagpur believes that true education is not restricted by  the four walls of a classroom, and this visit proved that philosophy in action. Students had the opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-life situations, which not only enhanced their scientific knowledge but also sparked a genuine passion for the subject. Having a practical approach — rather than simply memorising them for an exam — is the kind of education that stays with a student for the rest of their lives.

When students leave a place more curious and inspired than when they arrived, something truly worthwhile has been achieved — and the visit to the Raman Science Centre proved exactly that.
