INDORE, MAY, 2018 - A group of students from Global Indian International School, Indore participated in the recently concluded Malwa Utsav - a cultural event, where they performed a Nukkad Natak on “Beti Suraksha”. Through this street play, they highlighted the issues of female sexual abuse, gender based discrimination at home, and the increasing insecurity and crime rate against women in India. The alarming concern for increased safety and proper growth of females was also brought upfront by the students in a compelling manner. Mr. Shankar Lalwani - Chairman, Indore Development Authority (IDA) was also present as one of the spectators to catch a view of the much anticipated act of the day. He applauded and appreciated the efforts put in by the school students in effectively communicating a social message.
The street play by GIIS students was enacted at the Malwa Utsav organized by the Indore city administration in order to celebrate the Malwa tradition. Every year, this event witnesses thousands of people who mark their presence at this event to experience the Malwa culture and its distinct heritage.
Guided and mentored by Principal- GIIS Indore, the students prepared their bit within a short span of time. After two days of long practice sessions and hard-work, our budding actors were ready to showcase their work at Lal Bagh, Indore. The school team performed the act for around 7-8 times during the two consecutive days of the festival - 7th and 8th May. They made judicial use of props, which they had created themselves, to suit various characters and scenes in the play. It was heartening to see the crowd cheering and applauding for the students as they had utilized a common platform to bring on surface and depict the alarming issues related to women safety with such finesse and creativity.
The takeaways from the play enacted by GIIS students was to make men understand that over the past so many years, the role of women has diversified and so have their issues. The role of men is important here and they must participate in supporting the women and providing security to them across all spheres. The institution of family should revive its responsibility and pledge not to discriminate females at home, which means a son and a daughter should be treated equally. The perspective towards women should change to positivism and respect. Females should be groomed well so that they can also take decisions for their own selves.
