GIIS Maths Talent Hunt

GIIS Maths Talent Hunt

GIIS Maths Talent HuntCelebrating Ramanujam’s birthday on 22nd December by organising an Inter-GIIS Maths Talent Hunt, powered by Aryabhatta Club.

The interaction started with an observation on Ramanujam’s Hardy Number. The number derives its name from the following story G. H. Hardy told about Ramanujan. Once, in the taxi from London, Hardy noticed its number, 1729. He must have thought about it a little because he entered the room where Ramanujan lay in bed and, with scarcely a hello, blurted out his disappointment with it. It was, he declared, @aps@rather a dull number,@aps@ adding that he hoped that wasn@aps@t a bad omen. @aps@No, Hardy,@aps@ said Ramanujan, @aps@it is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two [positive] cubes in two different ways@aps@ .

1729 = 123 + 13 = 103 + 93

The Quiz was hosted by Global Indian International School Indore. Abhijeet of GIIS Indore introduced the subject ‘Maths’ and its conceptual learning and the honing of analytical and reasoning skills. Participating teams were GIIS Ahmedabad, GIIS Bangalore, GIIS Chinchwad, GIIS Indore, GIIS Noida and GIIS Surat. They joined over video conference and were ready to compete with each other.

There were four rounds. First round was operations on measurable quantities, decimals and distance. The students answered correctly and looked forward to getting more points by answering the passing round questions. Second question was based on visual round followed by an application round and rapid fire round which involved thinking on-spot and answering as many questions within a minute. The winners were GIIS Chinchwad scoring 55 points, First Runners Up was GIIS Noida with 49 points, second Runners UP was GIIS Bangalore with 42 points. Third Runners Up was GIIS Surat with 38 points, followed closely by GIIS Ahmedabad and GIIS Indore.

“Mathematics had always been my favourite subject and I loved teaching Maths to young children and the high points have always been when they caught on to a concept. I had the opportunity to write a number of Maths books for various age-groups with the same objective of making maths easy and logical for the students. Taking this forward we have decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of Ramanujan with a week-long maths activities at all GIIS campuses culminating to inter-GIIS competitions. It was great to see students work quickly on their concepts and mental maths to come up with the correct answer! MENTAL MATHS is to be the key word this year!” Said Ms. Sunita Jaisingh, Academic Head- Scholastics.

“Excellence in Maths comes only through practice, practice and practice!” said Mr. Rajeev Katyal, Country Director GIIS India.
