Students of Grade 1 to 5 of GIIS Smart Campus Balewadi got an opportunity to learn about germination, as part of Thinking Thursday activity on 21st July 2022.

Seed germination is the fundamental process by which different plant species grow from a single seed into a plant.  The process begins with watering the seed regularly. The water then activates enzymes that begin the plant's growth. After a period of time, the seed grows a root to access water underground followed by shoots that grow towards the sun. The shoots then keep growing into a full-fledged plant.

The process of seed germination in a cup is a fun way for students to view how seeds transform into plants under various conditions. Seeds don’t just need soil and water to start germinating but need some conditions. 

The students from Grades 1 to 5 designed and conducted an experiment based on some general background information they received.

The students who were a curious lot learned about the germination of seeds under different conditions like sprouting seeds under sunlight, moisture, optimum temperature, without moisture, and low temperature in different cups. The students were also introduced to new words like sprouting and embryo. The students observed various conditions of growth of a young plant from a seed. They also learnt that for seed germination, light is not essential in the early stages but plays the main role in later stages.

The excitement of the students was evident as they happily clicked pictures of their cups after the experiment.
