Grade 1 Students of Global Indian International School (GIIS), Ahmedabad were introduced to the Solar energy and its application as a part of Thinking Thursday activity.

Students learned about solar energy and how its renewable power can help the environment. They were taught that there are two categories of technologies that harness solar energy, Solar Photovoltaics and Solar Thermal. Solar Photovoltaic (or PV) is a technology that converts sunlight into direct current electricity by using semiconductors. In contrast, Solar Thermal is a technology that utilizes the heat energy from the sun for heating or electricity production.

A practical module was displayed to the students to understand how Solar power can be used to convert the heat into energy, which can be used in different ways. They were shown how the solar panel attached to a device made the helicopter move. Students learnt about the facts and advantages of solar energy.

Solar energy is clean and safe, prevents the destruction of habitats, combats climate change plus it’s a reliable energy source. It is of utmost importance to teach the next generation about the importance of Solar energy as the new era will be highly affected by climate change.
