GIIS Ahmedabad hosts MUN 2.0 conference for 300-plus diplomats to discuss and debate real-world problems

GIIS Ahmedabad hosted the second edition of the student-led Global Model United Nations (GIISMUN) conference, wherein students of grades 8 to 12 from various schools across the globe gathered to discuss and debate on real-world issues. GIISMUN 2023 conference was aimed to provide students with a platform to engage in diplomacy and international relations and hone their public speaking and critical thinking skills in the process.

The organising student committee namely Sanskriti Patidar - President, Prushti Dalsania - Director General,  Soham Srivastava - Vice President,  Hemang Pippal - Secretary General, and Shruti Bajpai - Deputy Secretary General, invested months of hard work and planning to execute the conference making it a huge success.

GIIS MUN 2.0 saw the participation of more than 300 students from local schools of Ahmedabad as well as GSF campuses (GIIS Noida, GIIS Whitefield, GIIS Bannerghatta, GIIS Balewadi, GIIS Hadapsar, OWIS Sarjapur, Vikaasa World School, Glendale Academy and GIIS Abu Dhabi) around the world. It was a four-day affair that brought together diverse participants to share their collective passion and zest for global affairs.

The conference began with an opening ceremony on 18th August 2023 where the Chief Guest, Murtuza Kutianawala, Founder and CEO of Bizz Baby Media and Entertainment, addressed the delegates and inspired them to be a part of such events that promote mental growth and awareness. He spoke about the importance of such events in shaping the future leaders of our society. Mr. Murtuza also applauded GIIS Ahmedabad for organising an event that nurtures creation of the young diplomats at an early age.

GIISMUN 2.0 conference was divided into six committees including UNSC, DISEC, WHO, Lok Sabha, Viceroy’s Cabinet and IPC. A total of 60 delegates represented Lok Sabha to address the issue of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits with resolutions to bring justice and reunion. 51 delegates from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) addressed and discussed the issues of the ISIS-Taliban crisis to combat extremism and promote peace in the affected areas.

The committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) also had 60 delegates to discuss and find solutions for the rise of the black market in the healthcare sector. This brainstorming session brought out great solutions and regulations essential for a healthier world. The delegates from the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) discussed the trade of small arms and light weaponry with emphasis on Latin America. A total of 59 delegates joined to bring about a change and shape a better world.

A new committee - Viceroy’s Cabinet - was introduced this year with an agenda to discuss the transfer of powers to the Indian subcontinent. The delegates represented a political leader from the pre-independence era to brainstorm regarding power allocation.

The most exciting part was the excursions organized by the student committee which took the participating diplomats to visit and explore India’s first heritage city including Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram, Vintage Village and a one-night stay at the Statue of Unity - the world’s tallest statue.

Mr. Caesar D’silva, Principal of GIIS Ahmedabad sharing his happiness on the success said, “We are extremely proud of our students for organising such a successful Model United Nations conference. The event provided a platform for young students to engage in diplomacy and international relations while honing their public speaking and critical thinking skills. We hope that this event will inspire more young students to take an interest in global issues and become future leaders of tomorrow.”

The conference hosted by GIIS Ahmedabad has set a benchmark of excellence for all the other schools in the city. The students along with committee members had a great learning experience with one another. We hope that these discussions, insightful debates, and inspiring excursions, apart from broadening horizons, also ignite a flame of curiosity and responsibility in the hearts of all participants.
