It becomes of utmost importance that safety of children is given due consideration, thus making schools safe also serves the purpose of their dual use as evacuation centers during emergencies. For this, Global Indian International School, Ahmedabad along with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) organized an emergency fire mock drill.

Students of Pre-primary to Grade 9 assembled in the ground to be addressed by the Chief fire safety officer of AMC. The students were first made aware of the causes of fires in home, school or public places. They were informed on how being inattentive can be dangerous while using the electric appliances which can cause fire.

The students were given hands-on-experience on using the fire extinguishers during emergency. The fire safety team showed how fire fighters evacuate the building wearing oxygen masks and save civilians from fire hazard. The chief fire safety officer explained the different types of fires and instructed about the symbols on fire extinguisher and how to use them accordingly.

Educational Institutions are responsible for building a disaster resilient society. An empowered, well prepared and equipped educational institution can contribute towards the generation of knowledge in the area of disasters, develop expertise in specific types of disaster and impart training in different fields. Schools are hubs of education, entrusted with the responsibility of creating citizens of tomorrow. A safe and secure environment is a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning. Thus ensuring safety of children, teachers and staff members during disasters is necessary. GIIS ensures to conduct such emergency mock drills on regular basis to teach students about disaster management as per the guidelines given under National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India.
