NOIDA, 20 JULY, 2018 - Thinking Thursday activities at Global Indian International School (GIIS), Noida have been started with an aim of helping the tiny tots of the school to learn and imbibe concrete concepts, and be able to apply them in real life. Such activities are being conducted twice every month, so that our students get time to retain the activity and apply the knowledge gained in their day to day lives.
The month of July focuses on usage of all the sensorial skills; each child was engaged in the activity to promote usage of all their senses to determine various aspects of a fruit. Children were divided in groups and each group was given two apples to observe the shape (i.e. use their sense of sight), feel texture of the fruit’s skin, smell the fruit, taste it and pay attention to the relative sounds the fruit produced while being chewed. This helped in strengthening their focus and work all their senses i.e. visual, tactile (sense of touch and feel), Olfactory (sense of smell), Gustatory (sense of taste) and Auditory (sense of hearing) senses proper synchronization with each other.
This activity helped children in using each of their senses to fullest. Since children were asked to observe various aspects of the fruit, each child was able to conclude that not every apple is red and of the same size, not every apple is smooth in texture; some can be rough as well. Every child agreed that apples have a particular kind of smell that is unique and different; they found out that most of the apples were sweet while only a few of them were a little sour (like the green apple).
Apart from the fact that children had a great time learning about various aspects of the fruit, they got a chance to have hands on experience of various senses along with the understanding of factors that help them differentiate and associate all the 5 senses to each other.
