Teaching Health and Safety to pre-primary students: A week of fun and learning at GIIS Noida

Health and Safety are crucial aspects that everyone needs to be aware of, especially children. To instil these values in children, GIIS Noida organized a Safety/Health and Hygiene week for the pre-primary students to teach them the importance of staying healthy and maintaining proper hygiene.

The week began with teachers giving children tips on how to stay healthy, including washing hands before and after eating, brushing teeth twice a day, exercising, walking to nearby places, drinking lots of water, getting plenty of sleep, and eating healthy food. The teachers made children familiar with different health and hygiene measures which they should take to remain fit and healthy.

In the first activity, teachers explained the importance of health and hygiene to children. They sensitized the kids about how to keep themselves clean by washing hands, brushing teeth, making hair properly, and applying lotion. In the second activity, a bubble bath activity was organized for kids, which helped them understand how they need to take a bath and dress up every day.

On day two, Zip Lock Bag Water Refraction activity was conducted, where respective teachers carried out an experiment to sensitize students to wash hands frequently. They drew some bacteria on paper and put that paper inside a zip lock bag. They drew a hand on the zip lock bag indicating that hands are full of bacteria and germs. A tub was filled with water, and the teachers slowly dipped the zip lock bag in the water. Due to refraction of light, the part of the bag that was immersed in water made the bacteria disappear, and only the hand was visible. This activity excited the students, and they were eager to learn more.

Teachers had also arranged a "Cooking without Fire - Fruit Salad" activity. The educators elucidated the perks of consuming fruits on a daily basis, following which each student was requested to bring a fruit of their preference. Subsequently, the teacher sanitized and sliced the fruits in the classroom. The pupils were also invited to participate as junior chefs and contribute by tossing fruits in the bowl, seasoning with salt and chat masala, and mixing them together. The teacher served the salad to the students, and a few of them assisted her in serving the dish.

On day three, teachers enacted a story about stranger danger, where one teacher became the stranger and one teacher became the child. The stranger tried to lure the child by giving her chocolates, candies or her favourite things. Once the child got her favourite things, the stranger picked up the child and ran away. The class teacher explained how the stranger was a danger and should never take anything from anyone they don’t know. The teacher also explained how children should be careful at home, in school, or on the roads.

In the second activity, the school organized a safety walk. The teacher walked around the classroom and asked the children to find the items which were safe for them and to count the number of items they found. She also asked the children to find the items that were unsafe for them, like scissors, sockets, open cupboard doors, and open lockers.

On the final day of the week, the school organized a video watch on health and hygiene. The teacher took children to the AV room and showed them videos on health and hygiene. In the second activity, the school organized a Soap and Pepper experiment. The teacher showed a video of the experiment and explained it step by step, encouraging the students to do the experiment and learn about germs and hygiene. The teacher explained how germs are in the form of black pepper and when we apply soap, the germs vanish from our hands, and we become germ-free.

In conclusion, the Safety/Health and Hygiene week was a great initiative by the school to sensitize children about the importance of health and hygiene. Educating children about safety and hygiene at an early age can help them develop healthy habits and stay safe and protected throughout their lives.
