Children in kindergarten are highly absorbent of the information that flows around them. By the age of 4, they begin to conceptualize all that is taught to them in class or through practical activities. They become more adept in finding a solution to the problem without even thinking about its possible outcome, or the fact that they can even solve it at all. By this age, they are ready to think and offer solutions even without putting their thoughts into action. To make them more curious about the world around them, activities like Thinking Thursday encourage children to be more involved in nature and reason with the world of science, technology, maths and other disciplines. Thinking Thursday helps them form a strong foundation of process skills which ultimately leads to proficient reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills. Thinking Thursday at GIIS Noida Thinking Thursday is being conducted twice every month. Students get a chance to advance from abstract to concrete concepts with help of activities that involve simple drawings helping them to relate and apply the skills learned. These activities not only allow the child to apply their knowledge but also helps them in achieving higher levels of creative thinking. 1. Glitter Pass along As a part of the thinking Thursday theme, glitter pass along activity was conducted in all the KG classes. The activity included adding some glitter to children’s hands to perform activities like opening the door, playing with toys, colouring, or grabbing a snack. Then children’s steps were retraced to show them how much glitter was left behind. Also, a sprinkle of glitter was put on every child’s hand, and then he/she was made to shake hands with everyone else in the room. Again, this helped in retracing their steps and note how much glitter was on. After the activity each child was made to wash the hands with solid scrubbing method; just like glitters are small and tiny, and take time to be washed off, the correlation between of germs and their ill effects was established very nicely. Students got to know about the ill effects of not washing hands properly, and got an opportunity to enhance their motor and thinking skills in general. 2. Why Brush Teeth: Human Denture Activity Thinking Thursday activity was conducted for nursery students of the school where they were explained about the functions our teeth perform like chewing of food, smiling, allowing us to speak, etc., and how bad food like junk food deteriorates its quality. Children were acquainted about the importance and correct way of brushing teeth with help of a denture model. It was a practical exercise conducted in class to give the students practical knowledge of the subject. Children got to understand the fact that a healthy mouth is a part of healthy body, and tooth cavity can easily spread if we don’t take care of our teeth properly. It is wise to brush twice in a day and eat foods that help our teeth healthy and strong.
