Grade XI students and parents attend an interactive session on career counselling

Grade 11 students of Global Indian international School (GIIS), Noida along with their parents, were invited to have a tete-a-tete with career counselling experts Mr. Piyush and Mr. Ajay in April 2019, to understand the world of opportunities the children can create for themselves through proper research & guidance, and focus towards their goal.

Mr. Piyush is a perfectionist and has studied from some top institutes like IIT Roorkee, IIM Bangalore, KTH Sweden and Tsinghua University in China. He started his career with world’s no.1 consulting firm – the Boston Consulting Group and later co-founded one of the Edtech Companies that enhances access to education and build careers for students. He, along with Mr. Ajay provide near-peer mentoring to students by giving them access to a global student community online and individual guidance through their trained and experienced counsellors.

During the session Mr Piyush emphasized on the fact that each child and parent must indulge in open ended discussions to analyse what career option is suitable for the child; each child needs to answer three questions before choosing a career option i.e. What is my interest?, Am I good at it?, and what is the viability of the option I am choosing? Once the child is able to answerall these questions with complete honesty then only can they be sure of what they want to do in life. He also said that choosing a career option is a collaborative act. Parents need to be supportive of their child’s dreams and must ensure that children interact with experts of the field to give them a clear picture of the growth and future requirement of the chosen field of interest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ganesh Sharma, Principal GIIS Noida, said – “No one is going to give a concrete and a full proof plan of success. If they want to be successful then they must be passionate about it and should follow the correct path i.e. interact with experts, teachers and parents who can guide the child to best of their abilities in achieving success and satisfaction in whatever they choose to become. Children today must prepare themselves for the jobs that will be available 10 years from now.”

Preparing our young learners to meet the challenges and opportunities in a knowledge-based economy is a difficult task. We cannot work alone in grooming the talents for their future.  All stakeholders, including the school, the parents and the individual have an indispensable role to play by providing the right direction and opportunities that supplement their studies. This session served as a perfect medium for the parents and students to put forth their confusions and have the experts provide appropriate solutions.
