Saving Planet Earth stems from our own initiatives

K2B students from Mountbatten Campus had the opportunity to attend the “Plastic Pollution” Workshop organized by the WorldWildLife(WWF) organization which was held at the Tanglin International Centre. The students were welcomed by Ms Georgina Tan, Educator at WWF, who briefed the students about the core values and mission of the revolutionary organization.

WWF is a non-profit organization that aims to conserve Earth’s natural environment and to tackle the challenges that threatens our biodiversity. The children listened intently as Ms Tan emphasized on the importance of taking care of the environment, conserving endangered species like leatherback turtles, chimpanzees, whale sharks and lastly, touched on the dangers that affects marine life.

The students brimmed with enthusiasm as they danced to the song “I had a little turtle” and played games that required them to be able to distinguish between plastics that can be used once versus plastics that can be reused many times.

Thereafter, it was time for the children to put to use the new knowledge that they have learned. The students were paired in teams and told to draw items that can be reused on a regular basis as well as items that can’t be used after one use.  They also had the chance to fish plastic out of a “marine habitat”.

Before the students departed from the workshop, they made a pledge saying “No, thank you” to plastic straws and “Yes” to cloth, reusable shopping bags and water bottles.

Through this insightful learning experience, students had the chance to learn about the importance of conserving the environment and the methods that they can  adopt to save the planet. GIIS regularly arranges for students to partake in such meaningful learning exchanges so as to help our students grow to be well-rounded achievers in the future.
