‘Necessity is the mother of invention.’ Said Plato and Karran Narang of GIIS Noida studying in Grade VII proved this profound statement all over again by inventing a solar charger for mobile and LED light as a backup when his phone battery went dead and his family could not find a single mobile charging point when they were out on a trip.
This incident got him thinking and though there are power banks available with limited backup, he wanted to create a cheap alternative for electricity that could supply 5 Volts of current. After going through various options he zeroed in on a solar panel and started experimenting with it. He attached a connector from an old car charger and with the help of a multi-meter checked the output and arrived at 5 volt. His charger was ready and once he connected it to the mobile phone, problem was solved.
“I had sent the concept note with a photograph of my solar charger to Shabaash India @ network 18 online.com and after few days I got a call from IBN 7 to display my product for approval.” Shared Karran. He demonstrated his charger in front of a panel of judges and charged their phones. He further showcased an LED Light, made from an old mobile battery, which gave a power back up of 16 to 18 hours. The panel appreciated his invention as it was a great initiative towards conservation of energy. “It will be of great help for people living in villages where there is limited or no supply of electricity.” said Karran. His invention was beamed by one of India’s top TV channels.
Learning becomes enjoyable when there is excitement and fun. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) classes at GIIS provide self-directed, challenge-based learning rather than simply absorbing and regurgitating facts. At GIIS, students are encouraged to take a creative approach to problem solving, thinking out-of-the-box and experimenting. “We appreciate the creative edge in Karran and will continuously support him to innovate by providing various knowledge platforms to learn and showcase his work”. Said Ms. Nandita Dasgupta, Principal GIIS Noida.
