To enhance mathematical concepts of reasoning and analysis, GIIS Noida celebrated Maths Week from 30th November to 5th December 2015 by showcasing the diverse and yet unique activities in numeracy. Students from grades I to VIII participated in a number of activities displaying spirited enthusiasm, absorbing information and enjoying the stimulating exercise of the mind. Mathematical Skills are crucial for the children due to their wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, economic and soft skill applications. Hence it is important to train students to become adept users of mathematics and to appreciate its usefulness for the future.
Grade I Students involved themselves in ‘Pattern Making’. Different shapes were provided to the students and they created beautiful patterns.
Grade II Students were involved in ‘Preparation of bills’. List of items and the cost of each item were given to the students. From the available items they chose 4-5 items and prepared a bill with the items selected by them.
Grade III Students participated in ‘Flower Making’ using the concept of equivalent fractions. Colored glazed sheets were first cut into equivalent fractions and then the equivalent strips were used to make flowers.
Grade IV Students searched for Prime Numbers using ‘Sieve of Eratosthenes’. This is a grid with numbers 1 to 100 that was given to students and the students, with the knowledge of Divisibility Rules, found out prime numbers.
Grade V The students enjoyed in converting ‘Decimal values into Fractions and Percentages.’
Grade VI The students were engaged in a comparative study between ‘perimeter of a square’ and ‘ perimeter of the same square divided into four equal small squares’.
Grade VII The class activity comprised of deriving the mathematical theorem - Sum of angles of a triangle is 180 degrees. This theorem was derived by cutting out four congruent triangles.
Grade VIII The topic for the students was ‘Area’. The students understood the concept by making a meter square using newspaper and found out the area of their classroom. This effort of the students was much appreciated by teachers, academic coordinator and also by the Principal.
These innovative lesson plans help in making the seemingly difficult problems approachable and enjoyable for the learners and they look forward to such activities that are not only fun but take their learning curve up.
