Maths Week

To enhance pre-number and number concepts of Pre-primary kids of GIIS Noida, the teachers planned innovative activities through games that relate mathematics to things in everyday life. A weeklong activity from 30th November to 5th December 2015 was carried out to develop the numeracy skills of the little ones. These activities help in forming a base for the child that would help them in the future for decision-making skills and mental math skills. The details of activities conducted on each day are as follows:

Day 1- Circle time:
Teachers familiarized the little ones with the presence of Maths and numbers everywhere! The children were introduced to relative words with numbers like date, time, weight, weather, distance, budget, money, cooking, construction, architecture, attendance, shopping and discount. The students were also asked to identify places where they could see numbers around them they came out with interesting observations. Number rhymes were recited in the class followed by a number story that not only was narrated by the teacher but also drawn on the board to provide visual cues.

Day 2- Bingo Game:
The teachers arranged for a ‘Bingo’ game for children in which they distributed number tickets. In Nursery numbers from 1-20 were distributed while the K.G. class got numbers from ranging from 1-50. The teachers played this game with their students just like Housie.

Day 3- Art and Craft Activity:
The tiny tots of Pre-Nursery were involved in a group activity - ‘Butterfly’. This activity involved the children to decorate their butterfly with stars, cutouts, bindis etc. corresponding to the numbers written on the wings of each butterfly. The group activity for Nursery classes was ‘Garden of Numbers’ where children made a garden on a chart paper with a specific number of cut-outs of flowers, fruits, leaves, birds, etc. corresponding to the numbers written on the paper. Children from KG classes made clocks and decorated them beautifully.

Day 4- Number Games
Number activities like ‘Parking game’, ‘Jump on Numbers’, ‘After Before numbers’, ‘Missing numbers’ etc. were played in different classes.

Day 5- Fun with Numbers Carnival
A carnival was arranged on the theme of ‘Fun with Numbers’ for the children in which they enjoyed Free play like Snakes and ladders by rolling the dice on the floor, playing hopscotch by counting number from 1 to 10, shapes and blocks. Stalls were also put up for ‘Treasure Hunt’ with numbers. The children loved playing these games and grasped the concepts of numbers very well. These activities were aimed towards auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners to enable them to understand the concepts of numbers and pre-numbers in a logical sequence.
