GIIS Tokyo Students Explore the Tokyo Stock Exchange

It is with great enthusiasm that I recount the enriching educational journey undertaken recently by our first-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Business Management students at the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). This visit was designed as a pragmatic learning experience to demystify the operations of the stock market and its pivotal role in the global financial landscape.

Upon arrival, the students were thrust into the dynamic world of finance, surrounded by the flurry of market activities and real-time data displays. The guided tour provided by the TSE staff was comprehensive, covering the exchange's storied history, its integral functions, and its significance within the international financial system. Observing live trading sessions proved to be a highlight for the students, offering them an authentic glimpse into the rapid pace and complex decision-making processes that define stock market transactions.

A particularly engaging aspect of the visit was the simulated stock trading session. Armed with a virtual budget of 10 million yen, students were tasked with applying their theoretical knowledge in a controlled, yet competitive environment. The simulation was a resounding success, with several students showcasing remarkable acumen in managing their portfolios. Notably, Mumi Hirose emerged as the frontrunner, achieving a final portfolio valuation of 12,054,232 yen, followed closely by Shreya Jayabalaji and Jun Murakami, who also demonstrated significant prowess in strategic investment.

This excursion went beyond teaching the mechanics of stock trading. It illuminated the profound influence of global events and economic trends on market behaviour, thereby enhancing our students' understanding of the intricate interconnections within the global economy. The hands-on experience provided a tangible context for the theoretical concepts discussed in class, fostering a deeper comprehension and appreciation of financial market dynamics.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported and facilitated this invaluable educational endeavour. The Tokyo Stock Exchange visit has undoubtedly broadened our students' horizons, equipping them with practical insights and experiences that will aid them in their academic and professional futures in the realm of business and finance.

This visit to the Tokyo Stock Exchange epitomises the practical application of knowledge that is central to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at GIIS Tokyo. By stepping beyond the traditional classroom setting, our IBDP curriculum not only imparts academic theory but also instils real-world skills and insights. Such experiences reinforce our commitment to a holistic education approach, ensuring that our students are well-prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the global business environment. We are proud to offer a programme that actively bridges theoretical learning with practical application, fostering a generation of learners who are as knowledgeable as they are adept at navigating the complexities of the financial world.
