Global Indian International School (GIIS) Tokyo proudly hosted GIISMUN Tokyo 2024, Chapter 4, from June 27th to July 1st, 2024, at Tower Hall Funabori in Tokyo. This event highlighted GIIS Tokyo's commitment to developing global leaders prepared to tackle the intricate challenges of tomorrow.
The conference, themed "Empower, Educate, and Evolve Towards Global Harmony," featured 265 delegates from eight countries - Japan, India, Malaysia, Georgia, Cameroon, Cambodia, Singap ore, and South Korea - representing 25 nationalities from 22 international schools. Notable participants included OWIS Whitefield, Bangalore; Witty International School, Udaipur; GIIS Noida; GIIS Ahmedabad; GIIS SMART Campus, Singapore; and Harrods International, Cambodia. GIISMUN Tokyo’s mission promoted a greater understanding of global issues among students and encouraged open-mindedness in the face of diversity and adversity.
The event marked significant growth in participation compared to previous years, showcasing the power of international collaboration and youth engagement in global affairs. The conference featured multiple committees addressing crucial global issues, including UNEP, UNICEF, ECOSOC, WFP, UNSC, DISEC, and SOCHUM. For the first time, a Japanese language committee was introduced, promoting inclusivity and allowing participants to engage in their native language. Committees were categorised based on the age of participants: Junior Committees (ages 11-13, English), Senior Committees (ages 14-20, English), and Japanese Committee (ages 11-20, Japanese).
Several awards recognised outstanding performances: Best Delegate for the most exemplary delegates in each committee, Outstanding Delegate for those who demonstrated exceptional skills and contributions, and Honourable Mention for delegates who displayed noteworthy participation and engagement. GIISMUN Tokyo Chapter 4 had several partners, including Tokyo International University as the Academic Partner and Ritsumeikan University Model United Nations and Nagoya University Model United Nations as Social Media Partners.
Events like these are crucial for students as they provide a platform to engage with current global issues, develop essential skills such as public speaking, negotiation, and problem-solving, and foster a deeper understanding of international relations. These experiences shape students into well-rounded global citizens who are prepared to make positive contributions to the world.
The event also included several additional features. For the first time, GIISMUN collaborated with 13 universities from America, Australia, and Japan, hosting a University Fair on June 29th. This provided delegates with valuable insights into higher education opportunities. Following the closing ceremony, a one-day excursion to Mt. Fuji was organised for all overseas delegates. This trip allowed participants to immerse themselves in the beauty of Japan’s iconic landmark, fostering cultural appreciation and creating lasting memories. On the final day, GIIS Tokyo hosted a Student Exchange Programme with over 115 participants from 10 international schools across India. This programme enabled participants to explore Japanese culture, experience the Tanabata celebration, and forge cross-cultural connections, enhancing the global perspective of the event.
Throughout these five days, delegates witnessed GIIS Tokyo's commitment to promoting a deeper understanding of global issues and encouraging open-mindedness. The passionate discussions, innovative solutions, and collaborative spirit displayed by all participants brought us closer to our vision of a world filled with active global citizens striving for peace, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights. The event concluded successfully, reinforcing GIIS Tokyo's commitment to nurturing future global leaders and fostering international cooperation and understanding.
The GIIS Tokyo community's dedication and meticulous efforts ensured that GIISMUN Tokyo Chapter 4 was an unforgettable and transformative experience for all involved, showcasing their ability to organise events to perfection.
