Math Magic activities for the young minds of GIIS Hadapsar

“Tell me and I will forget.

Teach me and I will remember.

Involve me and I will learn.”

Benjamin Franklin

Math Magic is an activity-based learning concept that teaches students the basics of the subject in a fun and interactive manner to students starting from pre-primary to grade 5.

At Global Indian International School (GIIS), Hadapsar goes the extra mile and makes sure students learn everything they’re taught with complete understanding. Here, mathematics and related concepts are simplified by taking cues from the objects students relate to the most.

We understand how math can be tricky and challenging for students. The concepts need a thorough understanding for an individual to be able to implement them. For this very reason, math magic was introduced to the young minds of GIIS. Using the activities based on the principles of the phenomenon made learning and understanding simpler and more interactive for the students and make recapitulation easy as and when required.

This month, KG students of GIIS Hadapsar were introduced to the concept of data handling encouraged them to strengthen their reasoning, logical and mathematical thinking abilities.

The best way to introduce data to little children is at the beginning of the formal schooling using something they love: their birthdays; something they can relate to. It is a great way to start a lesson on numbers. The activity was carried out using bar graphs made by the teachers to explain the concept. The bar graphs represented months; children were excited to tally and put their birthdays in the bar columns. At the end of the activity, they discussed the maximum and the minimum number of birthdays in the month. Eager enough, kids were elated to acknowledge who they shared their birthday month with!

Grade I students, they introduced to the concept of length in inches and meters. The activity was conducted using straws and paper cutouts to simplify the understanding of standard measuring units.

For Grade II, the students brought two different colored straws. The teachers demonstrated new ways of multiplication. Children explored new techniques and ways to multiply. This activity helped the students in improving their mental abilities and enhanced their multiplication skills as well.

The students from the Grade III to V on the other hand learned some new concepts of math by participating in hands-on activities like subtraction squares, building a factor tree, and making factor spiders respectively.

Activities like these strengthen their motor skills and help them with logic and reasoning. It makes them concentrate and focus for the desired results.

In MathMagic activities, students perform simple activities that help them in understanding mathematical concepts in a fun way. The activities are performed by the objects we see around and students learn the simple tricks and techniques to calculate.
