Global Indian International School (GIIS), Hadapsar, conducted an engaging and experiential learning activity, “Know Your School – Exploring the Heart of Our School,” to help students become familiar with their school environment and understand the significance of its various spaces and people.
Inspired by John Dewey’s words, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself,” the activity transformed the familiar school campus into a space for exploration, observation and discovery. Students visited several important areas, including the school entrance, office, library, AV room, computer lab, science lab, art room, music room, medical room, playground, garden and tuck shop.
During the exploration, students carefully observed each space and gathered information about its purpose and the activities conducted there. They also learned about the roles and responsibilities of the staff members who work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth functioning of the school.
An important part of the activity was the creation of a handmade School Journal. Using A4 sheets during their H.A. period, students wrote two to three sentences about each area, highlighting its purpose and importance. They also drew or pasted relevant pictures and decorated their journals creatively, presenting their learning in an organised and artistic manner.
The activity provided students with opportunities to strengthen essential skills such as observation, communication, teamwork, creativity and confidence. More importantly, it helped them recognise that every space within the school serves a unique purpose and that every member of the school community plays an important role in creating a safe, supportive and enriching learning environment.
The “Know Your School – Exploring the Heart of Our School” activity proved to be a meaningful hands-on learning experience, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and appreciation among students. By exploring their surroundings and documenting their observations, students discovered that learning can happen beyond the classroom.
The activity concluded with a valuable message for the young learners: every corner of the school has a purpose, every person has a role, and together they make the school a wonderful place to learn, explore and grow.
