GIIS Hadapsar organised a Waste Segregation Awareness Activity as part of its monthly iCare initiative, encouraging students to adopt responsible waste-management practices and become environmentally conscious citizens.
The activity aimed to raise awareness about the importance of segregating waste at the source and making sustainable choices to protect the environment. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, the initiative also reflected the Universal Values & Ethics and Innovation & Creativity pillars of the GIIS 9 GEMS framework.
The session began with an interactive discussion on the different types of waste generated in everyday life. Students were introduced to the three main categories of waste—wet waste, dry waste and domestic hazardous waste. They learnt about the colour-coded waste segregation system, wherein green is used for wet waste suitable for composting, blue for dry waste that can be recycled, and red for domestic hazardous waste that requires safe disposal.
To reinforce their understanding, students participated in a creative poster-making activity, using colours and paints on A4-size paper to illustrate the different categories of waste and highlight the significance of proper segregation.
The hands-on activity provided students with an engaging learning experience while enhancing their environmental awareness, critical thinking, creativity and decision-making skills. It also helped them understand how effective waste segregation can reduce pollution, promote recycling and composting, and contribute to a healthier environment.
The initiative encouraged students to incorporate responsible waste-disposal habits into their daily lives and recognise their role in environmental conservation. Through such meaningful activities, GIIS Hadapsar continues to nurture responsible young citizens who are committed to building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.
