Students of Grades X, XI, and XII at GIIS Hadapsar recently participated in an enlightening and thought-provoking session with Mr Karn Ragade, Founder and CEO of the Ocean Ally Foundation, an organisation dedicated to marine conservation, sustainability, and environmental responsibility.

The session introduced students to the vision of the Ocean Ally Foundation, established in Pune with the inspiring belief that one does not have to live by the sea to become a guardian of the ocean. Mr Ragade explained how rivers, lakes, and streams connect inland communities to the oceans, making the protection of water bodies a shared responsibility. He also highlighted the foundation’s work with students, researchers, policymakers, businesses, and communities to address pressing environmental challenges such as plastic pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change.

Through engaging stories, real-life examples, and interactive discussions, Mr Ragade encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices in their everyday lives. He emphasised the importance of reducing single-use plastics, managing waste responsibly, conserving natural resources, and making environmentally conscious choices. He reinforced the idea that even small individual actions can create a significant collective impact.

A key highlight of the session was the discussion on marine biodiversity and the vital role oceans play in maintaining the Earth’s ecological balance. Students gained insights into the threats faced by marine ecosystems due to pollution, climate change, and unsustainable human activities. Mr Ragade also stressed that protecting rivers and inland water bodies is equally important, as they ultimately flow into the oceans, carrying both life and pollution.

The interactive question-and-answer session provided students with an opportunity to explore practical ways of contributing to environmental conservation.
