More than 400 parents and students attended the IBDP orientation programme at the SMART Campus in July 2018 where teachers and a senior student talked on the internationally acclaimed diploma programme which prepares students to be critical thinkers and collaborative learners.
IB coordinator Deepa Chandrasekaran conducted the event where she made a presentation on the IB programme offered by GIIS, which has produced 11 world toppers since 2007 including the 3 toppers in 2018. Ms Deepa explained how the rigorous programme brings out the best in the students who learn much more beyond the curriculum. Students with an IB diploma get an upper hand over competition when they search for Universities for further studies, while the school helps them with career counselling and placements.
Ms Deepa also invited on stage the 2018 world topper Sandhya Ramachandran, who scored 45 grade points out of 45 in the examinations held in May.
Parents listened intently as Sandhya recalled her struggles in the diploma programme and how it brought out the best in her, including determination and hard work.
She called IB Year 2 as a hectic and fast-paced year with the added weight of IBDP examinations and university applications standing tall on students’ shoulders. She advised her juniors to complete their internal assignments in Year 1 if time and workload permits. She referred to Year 2 as a hectic and fast-paced year
The young woman who spent 14 formative years in GIIS credited her teachers for her academic success. “Without them, nothing will be possible”, she said. Sandhya also extended her gratitude to her fellow peers for revising notes together and motivating one another during examination periods.
The audience in the multi-purpose hall greeted her with a round of applause as she highlighted that while the world-class infrastructure and facilities present in SMART Campus makes it top-notch, it is the touch of the people in school that truly makes it a spectacular environment for students and staff.
