GIIS Jhankaar 2013 - Dancing like Stars, held at GIIS Balestier Campus on Friday, May 10, 2013 was a opportune platform given to students of GIIS to showcase their passion and talent for dance. The event was attended by Mr Atul Temurnikar, Mr Kaustubh Bodhankar, Mr Rajiv Vasudeva, Mrs Aparna Temurnikar, Mrs Smita Wargantiwar, Mrs Wrushali Bodhankar and Mr Madhukar Sonawane. Esteemed judges for the event were Dr Uma Rajan, Ms Mohana Harendran and Ms Susmita Dutta.
Dance is one of the purest forms of divine art where every posture conveys myriad expressions. GIIS Jhankaar dance competition provides a platform to students with dancing talents to explore different genres of dance and music. Students can compete with other more or equally versatile dance talents and be judged by leading professionals.
Participants in GIIS Jhankaar dance competition 2013 were from GIIS Balestier Campus, GIIS Kuala Lumpur Campus, Malaysia, GIIS East Coast Campus and GIIS Queenstown Campus. The team of performers from GIIS Kuala Lumpur Campus deserves a special mention for undertaking a journey to Singapore to participate and showcase their skills in the competition.
At the finals and mega finals of GIIS Jhankaar 2013, students competed in three categories - Junior: Classes 1 - 4, Sub Senior: Classes 5 - 8 and Senior: Classes 9 - 12. Participants performed in the solo and group. For the solo performances, the genres included classical, contemporary and folk, whereas for group performances the genres were folk and contemporary, with each performance being unique. The grandeur of the traditional classical performances like Bharathanatyam and Kathak, beholding diverse cultures of India was soul-touching. Equally appealing were the energetic folk dances like Bhangra, Rajasthani Ghoomar and Koli which projected the essence of Indian traditional community life. And finally, invigorating dances like Hip-Hop, Jazz, Salsa and pop under the Contemporary category set everyones feet tapping. Each performance was eye-catching, complemented by elaborate costumes and an energetic dance style.
The Mega Finals followed the Finals to choose the most versatile dancer among the winners from the three sub categories of the solo competition. The criteria for this section were dancing to the tune of a medley of the three genres of music - classical, contemporary and folk. Displaying synchrony and grace, each performer danced to perfection at the Mega Finals.
