Sports Day 2024: A day of athletic excellence

The highly anticipated Sports Day at GIIS East Coast Campus unfolded on August 24, 2024, with a vibrant display of energy, talent, and teamwork. Students showcased remarkable athletic skills, sportsmanship, and camaraderie, making it a memorable celebration of physical fitness and team spirit.

The day began with a warm welcome to Mr Terry Pathmanathan, a renowned former Singaporean footballer and coach, celebrated for his leadership and defensive prowess. His presence added a special dimension to the event, inspiring students to aim for excellence in all their sporting endeavours.

After the symbolic lighting of the torch by standout athletes, Principal CVK Sastry and Mr. Pathmanathan delivered motivational speeches, highlighting the values of discipline, perseverance, grit, and respect that sports instil. Their words ignited the competitive spirit among the students, setting the tone for the day.

The event continued with an impressive march past and lively sports displays from students in Grades 1-5. The adorable Rainbow Cheers dance performance by the tiny tots of GMP stole the spotlight, captivating the audience with their charm. The track events, spread across various age groups, kept spectators engrossed as they cheered for the students competing in exciting, nail-biting races.

While the long jump and shot put events had been held earlier, the highlight of the day was the live 100m and 4x100m relay races. The competition was divided into five categories—kindergarteners, Grades 1-2, U10, U12, U14, and U16—with separate races for boys and girls, ensuring a thrilling experience for all.

Spectators enjoyed the event from a well-arranged tent, complete with refreshments and snacks, while the athletes gave it their all on the field. The day concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where medals were awarded to the winners. Sunflower House emerged victorious as the overall champion, also securing the March Past trophy, while Orchid House claimed the House Display trophy.

The 2024 Sports Day at GIIS East Coast Campus was a resounding success, providing not only a platform for students to demonstrate their athletic abilities but also fostering a deep sense of unity and school spirit that will be cherished for years to come.
