Rocket balloon, rainbow color science and volcano experiments make learning interesting and fun

BENGALURU, 29 MAY, 2019 - The response for thinking Thursday activities for the year was great and children learned a lot of aspects about Science through activities.

The Nursery children enjoyed the wonderful fun-filled Rocket balloon experiment this mini rocket was very easy to make and so fun to set off, as the tiny tots watched with excitement.  The concept was explained by the teachers in a simple way. As long as the balloon is still filled with air, you just have to tie one end of the string. Put the other end of the string through the straw. Pull the string tight and tie it to another support. Blow up the balloon (but don't tie it.) Let go and watch the rocket fly. As we know that force is the amount of push or pull on an object, in this experiment, the children were demonstrated how to make a balloon rocket that was propelled by pressure.

The Rainbow colour science activity by KG 1 students was interesting as they watched how to create a beautiful rainbow effect using water and gems chocolate. The kids first arranged the gems on the rim of the plate. Then they poured water on the plate. Water was poured gradually till it covered all the gems. The color started diffusing into the water slowly after sometime, creating a rainbow effect on the plate.

In the Volcano experiment by KG 2 students, they spread the work surface with a newspaper. Then they formed a 6 inch high volcano shape out of the modelling clay.  The hue was enriched using color paint around the tip of the volcano. Then they made a small opening on the tip. Fresh baking soda was added into it, which created a foamy alkaline reaction. Then 3 drops of red food colouring were added to the baking soda and this acted as a catalyst for the eruption. Finally to this, 3 drops of liquid soap were added followed by some vinegar. The miniature volcano was seen by all with excitement.

These Thinking Thursday activities for the pre-primary children at GIIS Whitefield have increased their overall learning abilities, improved their social and motor skill development. These creative experiments have also helped to develop healthier social, cognitive, and emotional skills.
