World Environment Day: GIIS Whitefield students recreate, reimagine and rethink how best to care of Nature

"One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken" - Leo Tolstoy

Children of every age group are very fond of Nature. They share a special bond of friendship nestled on the foundation of love and care. GIIS Whitefield has always made it a natural process in the curriculum to spread awareness and guide its students to take small steps in order to protect and restore our environment.

“Over the years, we have been taking so many steps to protect and restore our environment. With the mission to take best care of Mother Earth, it is good to see our students'  creative initiatives at home, as their contribution towards sustaining the goodness and beauty of Nature everyday. “

Ashwani Kumar Saxena, Principal, GIIS Whitefield

This World Environment Day, pre-primary kids celebrated the occasion by striking a loving bond with Nature, through exciting activities, during their virtual class hours. Nursery kids were sensitized how to grow microgreens and they did it under the guidance of their parents. There was endearing activity to showcase the bond of love when they were to tie a friendship band or hug a balcony plant. KG1 students made newspaper bags to showcase how to reuse and recycle old newspapers at home. The bags could be used as an alternative to plastic bags. KG2 made attractive tote bags from their old T-shirts and this again was a smart way to reuse their old clothes. All the children planted a sapling in their home garden. The very innocent smile on their faces narrated the joy of connecting with Mother Nature.

Grades 1 to 12 had many activities for the students. The best way to sustain a society is by protecting the environment. The purpose was to create an awareness of taking good care of Nature, by appreciating the uniqueness and cherishing its biodiversity. The practice of ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ being the need of the hour, students expressed their love and gratitude in special ways. Children of Grade 1 grew fenugreek at home through the process of hydroponics without any pesticides. Grade 2 made a pollution catcher and Grade 3 made a model of a solar cooker using the materials available at home. Grade 4 built a pop bottle terrarium (a mini-ecosystem) and a carbon footprint tripod board activity that was fun and fabulous learning. The Ecosystem Restoration project by Grade 5 was around the topic on how to protect lakes in and around Bangalore undertaken by the government, the NGOs, or the communities. Grade 6 to 8 did canvas painting and showcased their creativity through art. Grade 9 to 12 students did the video-making activity, participated in debate and other interactive sessions conducted by senior grades. The quiz was conducted in some of the classes. The activity plan by teachers was well researched and shared. They were a very comprehensive way of communicating and sensitizing everyone about how best we can restore Nature by giving back love as much as we receive from our environment.
