Prioritising Educator Well-Being: GIIS Whitefield Marks Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that well-being is a shared responsibility, and that those who dedicate themselves to supporting others also need opportunities to care for themselves. Keeping this in mind, the Counselling and Special Education Department at GIIS Whitefield conducted a series of well-being sessions for teaching staff across all school segments during May under the theme “More Good Days Together.”

Teaching is a profession that demands empathy, patience, and constant engagement. While educators work tirelessly to nurture the academic and emotional growth of their students, their own mental and emotional wellness can often take a back seat. The well-being sessions were designed to encourage teachers to pause, reflect, and invest time in their personal well-being.

A range of mindfulness practices, grounding exercises, and reflective activities formed the core of the sessions. These experiences provided teachers with practical tools to manage stress, maintain emotional balance, and approach their daily responsibilities with greater clarity and resilience. The sessions also created a supportive space where educators could reconnect with themselves and with one another.

Strong educator well-being plays a vital role in shaping a positive school culture. Classrooms become more engaging, inclusive, and emotionally safe when teachers feel supported and empowered. By focusing on self-care and mental wellness, educators are better positioned to inspire confidence, foster meaningful relationships, and create enriching learning experiences for their students.

The initiative received an enthusiastic response from participants, many of whom found the sessions refreshing and uplifting. As the new academic year begins, the insights and practices shared during these sessions are expected to contribute to a healthier, more balanced, and positive learning environment for the entire school community.

Through initiatives like “More Good Days Together,” GIIS Whitefield continues to reinforce the importance of mental well-being, ensuring that educators feel valued, supported, and equipped to thrive both personally and professionally.
