Math Magic activities stimulates concentration power and analytical skills among GIISians

Mathematics is the music of reason. As part of the Math Magic activities for the Primary segment of Global Indian International School, Whitefield, there were many engaging activities for students of Grade 1-5.

Grade 1 did buy and selling activity of different items using replica of currency notes. They learned how to read the maximum retail price (MRP); To check the price of an article; and about cash and electronic transactions. They also experienced how to calculate and get the change for the cash transactions.

Grade 2 did many activities to understand how to measure length, weight, capacity and temperature. They also learnt about the non-standard units (hand span, foot span, cubit and pace) and standard units (centimetre, meter, gram, kilogram, millilitre, litre, second, minute, hour, degree centigrade). Each measuring device was rotated among all the 5 groups for hands-on experience and exploration to ensure each student learns about all the devices.

Grade 3 learned to measure their foot and hand size using newspaper, water colours, scissors and ruler. The purpose was to make them understand the method to measure the body parts by ruler in centimetres. This was an individual activity where students took the impression of their foot and hand on the newspaper, measured it with the help of ruler and recorded it in their math journal.

Grade 4 did the Calendar Trick Activity for the purpose of multiplication, addition and problem solving by using calendar, pencil and paper. This was a fun and magical trick activity to calculate and understand the short cut methods to find the sum.

Grade 5 measured their socks size using the traditional method with thread/ribbon. This was an individual activity were the students witnessed one of grandmother's trick--a trick for figuring out whether socks will fit without actually trying them on. The students were asked to make a fist, and then wrap the thread/ribbon all way around the hand. The aim was to get a foot length so that the heel will slightly overlap the toe. If the heel does slightly overlap the toe, the sock will fit that person.
