The green and sustainable SMART Campus was dotted with 50 trees in a Tree Plantation Ceremony that was organised to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. High Commissioner of India to Singapore, HE Mr Jawed Ashraf, was the Guest of Honour for the occasion.
Students gathered in the NEST area, the green and open spot used for outdoor lessons and activities in school, and planted 50 trees in the garden located in the middle of NEST area. While the GOH planted a Frangipani, students followed him by planting similar other plants.
Following the Plantation ceremony, HE Mr Jawed Ashraf addressed the students and spoke about the significance of Gandhi and philosophy even after 71 years of his being no more in this world. He emphasised that the values of peace and brotherhood preached by Gandhi Ji in his lifetime are quite relevant in today’s world that is full of diversity and conflicts.
Mr Ashraf said that the Tree Plantation Ceremony is a great initiative as the students are contributing towards a better future by planting the trees today.
He also said that it’s always a pleasure for him to visit GIIS SMART Campus as it makes him wonder how the futuristic and 21st-century campus is also deep-rooted in values. Mr Ashraf was highly appreciative of the Gandhi Centre which according to him offers a glimpse of Gandhi Ji’s life, mission and message.
GIIS constantly strives to do its bit for the environmental conservation and students are encouraged to participate in community or public activities that aim towards the betterment of the environment.
