The green and sustainable SMART Campus, which is eco-friendly at its very foundation, has now been awarded the status of Gold by Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

To receive BCA Green Mark Gold Certification, the design of the building development shall meet all the relevant mandatory requirements like – building energy performance, advanced green efforts, climatic responsive design, smart and healthy building and a few more.

The following elements in GIIS SMART Campus design ensure that the building has the lowest carbon footprint:

- Use of natural material like Terracotta on the exterior façade helps in reducing heat inside the campus which helps to increase aircon efficiency by over 20%.

- The use of double-glazed glass on the façade helps to reduce external noise in the classrooms by over 95%.

- Overhead ETFE canopy can withstand high-temperature fluctuations, while east-west facing facade allows free flow of natural breeze.

- Sustainability corner to encourage student participation in planting saplings for a greener environment. Recyclable waste collection points are on all floors. 

- All classrooms, studios, meeting rooms, corridors and toilets have light energy saving dimmers that work as motion sensors and light up space only when they sense movement. Thus, the lights will be dimmed when students or teachers are not in that space.

Water Conservation - Water management is a big element in the Green design of GIIS SMART:

- Besides, PUB approved fixtures in toilets, the campus uses two sources of water for its needs: Domestic waters and NEWater (Provision for future connection).

- Regulate the discharge of rainwater into public drainage systems by building rainwater retention tanks.

- Rain Gardens.

BCA is the governing authority in Singapore under the Ministry of National Development that regulates Singapore's building and construction industry.

It’s a matter of great pride for SMART Campus which heavily uses technology for the purpose of education but at the same time has maintained highly sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, which have resulted in this recognition by BCA.
