India's celebrated sarpanch Popatrao Pawar urges students to give back to society

Popatrao Baguji Pawar, the Executive Director of Maharashtra State Government's Model Village Programme and the farmer sarpanch of a gram panchayat in Maharashtra, motivated the students to give back to society as he visited GIIS SMART Campus for a Leadership Lecture Series on 19th of August.

In a short speech that preceded the Panel Discussion, Mr Pawar spoke about his significant contribution in development of villages in Maharashtra which was focussed on making the farmers self-reliant and arming the villages with the ability to fight with natural disasters like famine and flood.

Mr Pawar shared the interesting story of the challenges that he faced at the start of his project of making his village a developed one. Irrespective of all the challenges he kept fighting for his aspirations of transforming the village and was finally successful. A great cricket player, Mr Pawar chose to do something that will serve the society and community that he is part of.

During the Panel Discussion, he threw light on various issues as students posed questions like how should the students give back to society and in what ways can a facility like SMART Campus conserve water. While answering to the later he said that rooftop water harvesting and tree plantation are great ways to conserve water in a grand campus like this.

Mr Pawar urged the students to create a safe future by wisely using water and conserving the environment. He also said that students should visit his village in India and experience the transformation that villages can undergo with proper planning and determination.

Mr Pawar has notable achievements in making his village a model village by taking measures like water conservation, maintaining sanitation and hygiene and eradicating mosquitos. His village, Hiware bazare won the first National Award for community-led water conservation in 2007.

GIIS believes in inviting notable personalities from all walks of life who have exemplified that success is a result of the determination. Mr Pawar’s visit motivated the students not only to be mindful about conserving the environment but also take steps that can bring significant change in society.
