India@75 celebrated with flag-hoisting, cultural programme at GIIS SMART Campus

Students of Global Indian International School in Singapore joined in the celebrations of India’s ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ - a year-long event which commemorated 75 years of independence from British rule.

The school commenced the occasion with a flag-hoisting ceremony and singing of the national anthem. Principal Melissa Maria hoisted the flag in the presence of teachers, staff and students. This was followed by performances by the students, who put on a fantastic traditional dance show to the patriotic song ‘Vande Mataram’ (Hail the Motherland).

Students also gave speeches in Hindi and English to mark the occasion and speak about the glorious fight for freedom, and paid tribute to the freedom fighters who gave their life for the Motherland.

The function was attended by school’s management team including Deputy COO Mr Rajeev Katyal, who spoke on the great history of India, the civilisation which has been around for thousands of years, and the current status where expat Indians are taking the glory of the country beyond its shores.

GIIS has a dedicated museum to Mahatma Gandhi, father of the Indian nation, who was a reckoning force in India’s freedom struggle against British rule. The museum which is situated within the premises of the school in Punggol, has replica of artefacts which belonged to the Mahatma including round glasses, wooden slippers, etc. There are also books on Gandhi, and the museum is open to public.

Parents came in large numbers to the celebrations, and participated in the flag-hoisting ceremony.
