International Day of Yoga was observed and practiced at the GIIS SMART Campus in June 2018, as many joined in to participate in an event which celebrates healthy living and exercise as a way of life.
An initiative by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, Yoga Day - as it is popularly known - is celebrated worldwide on 21 June every year. The day was observed on Sunday in Singapore, with 33 enthusiasts participating in the event organized by the Indian High Commission in Singapore.
The High Commission distributed T-shirts, Yoga mats and goodie bags for participants in the event which has taken the world by storm since its inception in 2014. The date was unanimously declared official by the United Nations one year later.
This year, hundreds of thousands in India and around the world, including Mr Modi, had observed the day by practicing a number of asanas.
Global Indian International School had offered the multipurpose hall in its new SMART Campus at Punggol to observe the day. The 33 participants exercised various asanas including suryanamaskar (sun salutation), gomukhasana (cow face pose), kandharasan (shoulder pose), shalabhasan (locust pose) and others in the 1.5 hrs session conducted by Mr Pavlesh from Nikam Guruji Yoga Kutir.
Mr Pavlesh, who has been teaching yoga since 1997, explained the yoga poses while his two helpers demonstrated the poses to assist participants at the event, which ended at 11 a.m.
Meanwhile, a similar event was held at the East Coast Campus which saw good participation from Yoga enthusiasts. Many asanas were performed by all present.
