Kaveri Priya Putti, a student of Grade 11 CBSE, made GIIS proud once again as her app ‘LABO - Breadwinners of Tomorrow’, won a prize at the SheHacks Hackathon. The Hackathon was conducted by GirlsInTech at Google Asia Pacific HQ, Singapore, in collaboration with Google, Visa, J.P.Morgan and ThoughtWorks, in February 2019.

Girls from all over Singapore participated in teams of a maximum of 4 members.

Kaveri Priya was part of The Zombie Candies team where she was the youngest member as against others who had already completed their Junior College. Kaveri took the onus of developing the app and handled all the technical aspects like coding, UI etc. The team persistently worked hard for 36 hours and finally created and pitched the product LABO to the panel.

LABO is a means of tapping the potential of qualified yet unemployed homemakers who stay at home due to some constraints. The app empowers the homemakers who wish to contribute to the family income, and also offers them an opportunity to learn new skills.  

The team was required to ideate, code, create and pitch the app within the specified time. Kaveri ideated the app from scratch and gave it its final shape by using platforms like App Inventor, TensorFlow, Android Studio and Fire Base. She created a user-friendly interface that offers a lot of flexibility to the user.

The app received the best Technical Innovation award.

As the winners of the 'Technical Innovation' the team-members received an Amazon Gift card worth $30 and JP Morgan bags. However, the best perk according to Kaveri was the enormous number of connections she made during the Hackathon and the experts she met in the form of judges whom she considers her mentors.

The creation of this product is not the end and the winning team will try its best to officially launch the app and spread its functionality to senior citizens and specially-abled.

Kaveri Priya attributes a large part of her success to the Artificial Intelligence workshop that she attended at the school. She said that the skills learnt there helped her a lot in ideating and coding the product. Kaveri Priya is also thankful to the Principal, Ms Melissa Maria, who encouraged her to participate in the contest. She is also thankful to GIIS for recognising her talent and offering the scholarship that provided her with the opportunity to study in SMART Campus, Singapore.

The 9GEMS pedagogy of GIIS encourages students to develop unique skills in various fields and the school regularly introduces them to various platforms where they can showcase their talent.
