Little Zebras tell the Black & White story

Little Zebras tell the Black & White storyAt GIIS we firmly believe that students must be challenged to learn. At the same time we differentiate learning so that it caters to each and every child. Our Pre-Primary teachers ensure that all activities cater to multiple intelligences so that every type of learner is not only engaged but also enjoys the activity and the learning outcome is achieved.

Black & White Day saw a number of activities catering to visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners. Teachers engaged students through games which helped to develop their fine as well as gross motor skills. Teachers have been at their innovative best, thinking of new and inspiring ways to help children connect through everyday experiences.

Nursery section took part in a game where they had to follow instructions and run and touch the black and white painted sidewalk in school. Students were asked to observe their dark shadows and trace them with white chalk. Quite a task for Nursery kids but they mastered it!

Children were taken to the music room and shown the keyboard with its black & white keys. This was followed by a group activity where they pasted black paper on ice-cream sticks to create their own keyboard.

Yet another game used a spider web created on a chart and blindfolded kids attempted to make the spider reach his web.

Nursery students also played a game on a black and white chess board and arranged the chessmen on the squares , white on black and black on white.

They also enjoyed tracing on a salt tray made of white salt sprinkled on a black chart and enjoyed making patterns and shapes.

The students of KG1 played a game where three-letter words and sight words were written on a white balloon. They passed it around in a circle and when the music stopped they had to read out a word.

Art & craft activity was also a part of Black & White day. KG1 students used black paint and a paintbrush to carefully paint stripes on a white cat. KG 1 students also made a 3D dog from paper cups.. These activities require coordination of fine motor skills.

They played a zebra crossing game where they walked carefully with their school bags across strips of black paper. This helps them to develop their balance and motor coordination.

KG2 students stepped back in time to watch a black and white Charlie Chaplin film and they were exposed to an era when there were no colour films. There was much discussion about the topic since most of the kids had never seen a black and white movie. Charlie Chaplin once again captured the minds of the new generation!

They also played dominoes. Students rolled a big black and white dice to play their version of a game of dominoes. It’s all about following the rules. They also played ‘pin the tail on the zebra’ and a ‘cat and mouse’ game.

Black & White Day was put together with simple ideas to use as many things which are readily available from everyday life. All credit to the teachers who made this day so interesting for the students and Aparna Bhavani who did a terrific job of decorating the foyer.
