Community Helpers

Family Maths Day
Community Helpers

Community HelpersCommunity Helpers Week brought an opportunity for students across all levels of Pre-Primary to experience the roles and responsibilities of some important helpers and their contribution to society.

Students were involved in role-playing a number of these professions wherein, they got to understand the duties of different people who assist in a particular service.

The week began with a role-play of an airport. Students were extremely excited to queue up for boarding passes and were directed to the security gate. A student dressed as the security guard checked all the ‘passengers’ and their luggage. Next they waited at the departure lounge and browsed through books until their flight was ready for departure. They boarded the ‘GIIS airline flight to Singapore’ and were greeted by the air hostess who guided them to their seats and served them refreshments. The splendid sound effects as the aircraft soared up into the sky had all the children squealing with delight. Announcements were made to fasten seat belts and the temperature was announced on landing. Children from Nursery to KG2 took part in the airport activity.

The next activity for students of KG2 was a ‘bank tour’. The foyer was decorated with counters for bank loans, cashier, cheque deposit etc. Students did a role play under the guidance of their teachers and understood how to deposit cash and cheques. The highlight of the bank display was a child sized ATM designed by the teachers were kids lined up to key in their pin and collect ‘cash’ from the GIIS ATM.

The Nursery students wrote letters to their parents and posted it in a post box in the classroom. The letters were later taken and posted and are on their way to their parents. There was also a visit by a farmer who brought his cow along with him. Excited kids watched the cow being fed and milked in school.

The students of KG 1 did an interesting role play on the fireman. Students were asked to dial the fire station number to call the firemen to put out the fire. The firemen came with a miniature truck, pail, fire extinguishers and hose to put out the fire. All the children took turns and enjoyed the activity.

The next activity was the hospital role play. Kids from KG1 and KG2 went on a round of ENT, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Pharmacy etc. and it was wonderful to see their confidence as they explained their well rehearsed lines about various medical departments. Children experimented with taking blood pressure, using a stethoscope, doing vision tests, writing prescriptions and dispensing medicines.
