A fun-filled Montessori week

Montessori Week was a combination of learning and fun-filled activities for a week. Each and every student was engaged through a multitude of activities using the Montessori materials. Our students, who have worked throughout the year with the materials, enjoyed the week-long process wherein they not only repeated their learning but also did a number of extended activities.

The Montessori materials lend themselves to a variety of extended activities. The students of Nursery did clay cutting with scissors, made a tree using red rods and broad stairs and matched the pink tower cubes to base cards. They arranged books in the library, used the red rods to create the sun’s rays and enjoyed kitchen activities like straining and grating.

The KG 1 students walked carefully through a maze of red rods, played a game of thumbola using sounds of letters, played the snake game with the Math material, balanced towers with the knobless cylinders, practiced washing their hands, created shapes with the tessellation boxes, worked with the dressing frames, noise boxes and picture cards. They laced pictures of animals, made alphabet and number trains and worked with the pink scheme picture cards.

Montessori week was an opportunity to use the same materials in more ways than one. While learning was reinforced through repetition of old activities, new activities were fun and children were allowed to explore.

The KG2 students used the colour box to make the school logo, grading the colours as they progressed, used the geometrical solids to make rockets and houses, arranged the Hindi sandpaper letters in order, did a matching activity with continent cards and parts of flowers, learned to open and shut doors, worked with constructive triangles, the Binomial cube, addition and subtraction board and countless other exciting and fun stuff.

The activities culminated in a presentation for parents on the final day. Mums and dads arrived and accompanied their kids to watch them present activities and answer questions. Parents were happy and satisfied to get an opportunity to understand how their children used the materials and many were fascinated by how the Montessori curriculum works. Global Montessori Plus is truly unique. It provides children with a strong foundation in all the five areas of the Montessori method. Teachers provide extended and challenging activities daily, which arouse the natural curiosity of the kids as they explore further with the materials.
