There’s always a newer and better way to learn at GIIS Bangalore! The objective is to make the activities fun-filled and at the same time challenging. The school has set up an ‘Innovation Team’ for the Pre-primary section. The team of teachers explore and find innovative ways to introduce lessons to children. Game-based learning has always appealed to little children and they are ready to participate with great joy and enthusiasm. “It’s not about learning anymore - it’s a game.” Says Ms. Preetha D’Mello, National Resource Coordinator Pre-Primary GIIS Bangalore. “But at the end of the activity, learning has happened and the teachers are able to evaluate the same through observation and the expected learning outcome is achieved.”
Kicking off Sight Words
The students of KG2 played a soccer game to learn sight words. Sight words were stuck onto cones on the field. Students were asked to read the word and if they achieved at least 5 words they got a turn to kick the ball into the net. The idea was to use their gross motor skills and allow them freedom of movement while learning. The kids had a fun time playing and learning and enjoyed the outdoor activity. To the pleasant surprise of the teachers they could spot some future footballers in action as well.
Flower-hunt for Phonics
The students of KG1 participated in a flower-hunt using phonic sounds. Letters were written on colourful paper flowers, which were stuck onto the hedges in the garden. As the teacher called out a sound, children went in search of the flowers and proudly displayed them. This was an unusual but a very welcome way of learning the phonic sounds.
The little ones of Nursery have just begun their academic journey and only a month into it they were tested on colour sorting. A muffin tray activity involved sorting crayons of different colours and children were clearly able to visually differentiate the colours through the activity. Red Day brought another similar opportunity, which involved fishing out only the red objects from a water bath using a tea strainer. Needless to say they were reluctant to stop!
The Pre-primary years are important formative years in the life of a student. Learning happens in many ways and at GIIS Bangalore we endeavour to ensure that children learn not only through traditional methods but also in new and exciting ways !
