Little wonders say no to plastic on World Environment Day

Bits of paper lying on the floor. Makes the place untidy. Pick them up.

The rhyme is known to all kindergarteners. Today this is more applicable to plastic wrappers and plastic wastes. The youngest learners of GIIS Whitefield celebrated World Environment Day with a powerful message to beat plastic pollution.

The tiny tots witness a Special Assembly

The Pre Primary children expressed their love for Mother Nature. They stood holding saplings near the trees in the campus. These trees had placards with emphatic slogans to invoke the feeling of love and care for the trees and plants. The small children also planted saplings in the garden backyard with the help of their teachers.  There was a beautiful special assembly by the teachers for the small children. Students were dressed up in green and shared the messages like saying no to plastic, using cloth bag and watering plants at home and so on. There was a puppet show by the teachers to reinstate the necessity to ban plastic so that the environment can remain clean and green. The children were shown a power-point presentation to elaborate the harmful impact of plastic to humans, birds and even animals and how oceans are also getting polluted because of the dumping of waste. The skit reflected the use of eco-friendly ways of living a plastic-free life such as steel tiffin boxes, steel glass for drinking water and cloth bags for shopping. They demonstrated making tote bags out of old T-shirts which looked stylish and a good reusable substitute for plastic bags. Later, the students of KG 1 and KG 2 made tote bags in their respective class rooms as takeaways.

Special message for Pre Primary kids

Dr. Shivananda (Principal, GIIS Whitefield) interacted with all the students and appreciated the presentations by all the segments. Their innocence reflected in their answers when asked about the healthy food and fruits they ate and even the not-so-healthy potato chips. The children knew that plants were to be nurtured with soil and water and that they were a source of oxygen to breathe. He was happy to see the enthusiasm and curiosity among them to learn and stay friendly with Mother Nature.  Ms. Preetha D’Mello (Head Mistress) appreciated the teachers and the students for the insightful presentation and knowledge sharing session.
