Crossing the Midline as a Group: A wonderful activity by GIIS Bangalore Pre Primary kids to enhance their motor coordination

Early years of schooling offered across Global Indian International School (GIIS) campuses gives the right foundation for the students by way of many thoughtful activities to nurture them. A recent activity at GIIS Bangalore – ‘Crossing the Midline’, conducted for the small wonders is worth appreciating. This particular activity is important not just for overall coordination but also because it builds essential pathways in the brain.  So strengthening this skill is very much needed to help the young ones to play sports and also to help him/her build fine motor skills such as writing. Children develop the large muscle group first then work towards refining smaller muscle groups. Research proves that upon acquiring a good foundation in crossing midline for gross motor movements, a child is able to cross midline in reading or writing easily as they grow older.

Crossing the Midline Activity requires the students to walk on the Rope/Pipe kept on the floor. The rope or hose is placed in different patterns. This is a group activity which allows the children to balance and walk in the specific pattern by holding each other’s hands. It is considered as one of the essential gross motor skills a child needs to develop in crossing the midline.  The interesting aspect here is that the kids use both sides of the body together, specifically by crossing a body part from one side of the body into the space of the other side of the body, such as using the right hand to scratch the left elbow.

5 Key benefits of Midline activities for the Pre Primary children

  • Vestibular Development  for balance
  • Midline Development for coordinated movement and thinking
  • Locomotion  involving different ways to get from here to there
  • Eye/Foot Coordination in order to connect the brain, eyes, and feet for specific tasks
  • Focus and Concentration for controlling the body and brain to achieve a specific task over a period of time

GIIS Bangalore children of Pre Primary were seen enthusiastic all throughout the activity and they performed the task by following the instructions perfectly. The tiny tots were seen helping each other as a group by slowing down and following the pattern as a group.
