Thinking Thursday turned into a day of exciting discoveries for our Grade 1 and 2 young scientists, as they explored the world of science through hands-on experiments, curious questions and plenty of fun.
Our young explorers investigated an acid-base neutralisation reaction and watched with excitement as fizzing bubbles produced gas that inflated balloons right before their eyes. The activity gave students an opportunity to observe a scientific reaction first-hand and understand how everyday materials can create fascinating results.
The learning continued with the Iodine Test for Starch, where students tested different food items and discovered that potatoes, bread and rice turned deep blue-black, revealing the presence of starch. Through observation and experimentation, they connected what they saw with the scientific concepts being explored.
More than simply learning scientific facts, the activities encouraged students to question, observe, experiment and draw conclusions through their own experiences. By turning everyday materials into exciting experiments, Thinking Thursday made learning interactive, memorable and meaningful.
The experience beautifully reflects GEM 3: Skills Development, one of the nine pillars of the GIIS 9GEMS holistic education framework. Through hands-on learning opportunities, students develop practical skills while strengthening their curiosity, problem-solving abilities and confidence to explore the world around them.
With every fizzing reaction, surprising colour change and curious question, our young learners discovered that science is not just something to read about—it is something to experience, explore and enjoy.
