In a delightful celebration of poetry and culture, Global Indian International School (GIIS) Tokyo had the privilege of attending "Bharathi Vizha" on the 10th of December 2023. This significant event was organized by Makkal Sinthanaip Peravai, an organization dedicated to commemorating the birthday of one of Tamil Nadu's greatest poets, Bharathiyar. While Makkal Sinthanaip Peravai's head office is in Erode District, they extended their reach to Tokyo in 2024, bringing the essence of Bharathiyar's literary brilliance to the Japanese capital. 
 

Bharathiyar, Subramania Bharathi, affectionately known as Bharathiyar, was a poet whose verses transcended boundaries and ignited a sense of patriotism and social reform among his readers. His poems continue to resonate with people, and Makkal Sinthanaip Peravai aimed to keep his legacy alive through this annual celebration.
 

The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of both primary and secondary students from GIIS Tokyo. The primary students took to the stage with confidence, reciting Bharathiyar's poems with fervor and grace. This choice allowed these young talents to explore the rich cultural heritage of India and develop a deep respect for the Tamil language and its literary treasures. Their performances were nothing short of spectacular, showcasing their dedication and hard work in learning and reciting these classic verses.
 

The secondary students of GIIS Tokyo, equally passionate about Bharathiyar's work, delivered insightful speeches about his life and contributions. These young orators eloquently highlighted Bharathiyar's invaluable role in Indian literature and his influence in the struggle for independence. They also shed light on his commitment to social reform, women's rights, and the abolition of caste-based discrimination—issues that continue to resonate with contemporary society.
 

This celebration of Bharathi Vizha served as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Bharathiyar and the importance of preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. GIIS Tokyo is proud to have been part of this event, which not only enriched the students' understanding of their cultural roots but also instilled in them the values of social reform, equality, and the pursuit of knowledge that Bharathiyar so passionately advocated.
