GIIS Balewadi's Young Eco-Champions Learn Sustainability Through Hands-On Composting

GIIS Balewadi organised an engaging composting activity for Nursery, K1, and K2 students, introducing them to the importance of reducing food waste and protecting the environment through practical, hands-on learning, as part of its i-Care programme.

The activity was thoughtfully designed to suit different age groups. K1 and K2 students explored the natural process of decomposition by collecting leftover food from their tiffin boxes and placing it into the soil. They learned how organic waste gradually breaks down over time to form nutrient-rich compost, which enriches the soil and supports healthy plant growth.

Meanwhile, the Nursery students were introduced to the concept of liquid composting. They collected small amounts of leftover food in transparent bottles filled with water, allowing them to observe the gradual fermentation process. Over the next 15 days, the food waste will transform into a nutrient-rich liquid fertiliser that can be used to nourish plants, helping children understand how everyday waste can be repurposed in meaningful ways.

Through this age-appropriate activity, students discovered that food waste does not always need to be discarded but can instead be recycled into valuable resources for nature. The interactive experience encouraged curiosity, environmental awareness, and the development of responsible habits from an early age while reinforcing the importance of sustainable living.

The i-Care composting activity reflected GIIS Balewadi's commitment to experiential learning by combining environmental education with practical application. By engaging in real-life sustainability practices, the young learners gained a deeper appreciation for waste management, conservation, and their role in caring for the planet, laying the foundation for environmentally responsible citizens of the future.
