GIIS Balewadi celebrated Independence Day with a patriotic and memorable programme that placed students at the heart of the celebrations. Planned, organised and executed entirely by the Student Council, the event provided students with a meaningful platform to demonstrate leadership, teamwork, creativity, responsibility and ownership while celebrating the spirit of the nation.

The celebrations commenced with the flag-hoisting ceremony by the Principal, followed by a disciplined and spirited march past by the students. The atmosphere resonated with pride and patriotism as students participated with enthusiasm and confidence.

The cultural segment added colour and vibrancy to the programme. Students from Grades 3 to 8 presented patriotic songs and cultural performances that showcased their talent and dedication. A moving mashup of “Maa Tujhe Salaam” and “Bharat Ka Rehne Wala Hoon” created a strong sense of national pride among the audience.

Students of Grades 4 and 5 presented a touching theatrical performance, “Story of a Soldier,” highlighting the courage, discipline, sacrifice and dedication of the armed forces. An engaging performance on the Bomb Squad showcased bravery, alertness and selfless service, while an energetic patriotic dance reflected the students’ confidence, coordination and enthusiasm. Together, the performances conveyed powerful values of courage, sacrifice, responsibility and patriotism.

A meaningful interaction between the students and the Principal further enriched the programme. Students reflected on the significance of Independence Day and discussed the meaning of freedom, responsibility and citizenship. The interaction encouraged them to look beyond the celebrations and understand the deeper responsibilities that come with freedom.

One of the highlights of the event was the entertaining and thought-provoking “Roast Battle” between the Britishers and the Freedom Fighters. Presenting an engaging perspective on India—then and now, the performance brought together humour, creativity and historical reflection, with Donald Trump portrayed as the judge. Beyond its entertainment value, the act served as an eye-opener, highlighting the resilience, courage and strength of the Indian spirit.

The Treasure Hunt based on India’s Freedom Struggle added an element of excitement and active participation. Students enthusiastically solved clues and explored significant moments from India’s history, transforming learning into an enjoyable and engaging experience.

The celebrations concluded on a high note with a vibrant flash mob performed to patriotic songs. The energetic performance brought students and teachers together in an atmosphere of joy, unity and national pride.

Adding to the spirit of student ownership, sweets distributed during the celebrations were lovingly packed by Student Council members, teachers and student volunteers from the Middle Segment.

The Independence Day celebration at GIIS Balewadi was much more than a ceremonial programme. It was a powerful example of experiential learning and student leadership, providing authentic opportunities for collaboration, creativity, decision-making and responsibility. The enthusiasm, commitment and confidence displayed by the Student Council and student volunteers made the celebration a memorable tribute to freedom, unity and the power of the young Indian voice.
