‘Rich and blissful is the garden in which birds find a place to greet and food to eat.’
In today’s world natural resources are depleting to a great extent. The survival of many migrating and non-migrating birds has become a concern in the world today. A small helping hand towards our feathered friends may bring back the chirping and the melodies on our roofs and in our gardens. GIIS Balewadi conducted ‘Bird feeding activity for ‘Grade 1 and 2 on 7th March 2018 and for Pre-Primary on 8th March 2018.
Making a bird feeder with students was a wonderful opportunity to discuss bird habitats and their needs. Bird feeders also provided kids with the chance to observe birds in their natural environment. This activity was a simple science exploration to attract birds in the school backyard. This was a great way for students to get up close with nature and make interesting observations! Students looked curious and happy to watch the different types of birds feeding on the birdseed.
The teachers had prepared flash-cards of birds and shared information on how to take care of birds during summer season when the temperature shoots up high. To build these bird feeders, the students used scrap materials like juice cartons or shoe boxes which were decorated to make them look good. The coconut’s hard shells were beautifully painted in which grains and water was kept to feed the birds. Students enjoyed this activity and also shared their learnings. They understood that the tiny birds have to be cared just as humans and any other living being and this can be done by providing them with food and water to help them survive joyfully with these basic necessities made easily available.
