Words, Wit, and Wisdom: GIIS KL Hosts Interhouse Debate Competition

On April 23, 2026, the GIIS KL auditorium buzzed with intellectual fervor as students from Grades 9 and 10 took the stage for the highly anticipated Interhouse Debate Competition. This signature event brought together the sharpest minds from Hibiscus, Sunflower, Orchid, and Chrysanthemum houses for a day of rigorous intellectual exchange and spirited oratory.

The competition was structured in two distinct phases, designed to test the depth and agility of the participants' reasoning. The preliminary round, held within classrooms under the keen supervision of teachers, challenged students with the contemporary motion: “Podcasts and audiobooks are the future of storytelling.” Emerging from a pool of talented speakers, the most articulate debaters were selected to represent their houses in the grand finale.

The atmosphere shifted to the school auditorium for the final round, where the stakes were raised. In the presence of a distinguished panel of judges and a captive audience of peers and faculty, finalists tackled the provocative topic: “Authors should interact with readers on social media.” Each house presented a balanced team, with speakers delivering structured arguments "for" and "against" the motion. The energy in the room peaked during the rebuttal rounds, where students demonstrated remarkable presence of mind, dismantling opposing arguments with surgical precision and wit.

Beyond the trophies and accolades, the event served a larger purpose. Deeply rooted in the school’s commitment to holistic growth, the competition aligned with the 9GEMS framework, specifically focusing on Academic Excellence, Personality Development, and Leadership. Furthermore, by fostering an environment of structured dialogue, the event mirrored the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

The judges evaluated the participants not just on their research and content, but on the nuance of their delivery and their ability to remain composed under pressure. As the event drew to a close, the judges offered constructive feedback, praising the students for their clarity of thought and the high caliber of their argumentative skills. The day concluded with the proud declaration of winners, leaving the audience inspired by the power of the spoken word and the critical thinking skills of the next generation of leaders.
