Students across Grades 1 through 12 recently showcased their creative talent and environmental awareness in the GSG Eco Showdown, an inter-school competition hosted by GIIS Singapore Campus. Blending artistic expression with critical global values, the event invited young minds to explore sustainability, waste reduction, and eco-friendly habits through painting, essay writing, and photography.

The Art Competition saw massive enthusiasm from the younger grades under the guidance of Ms. Selvi Ramesh from the Department of Art. Every student from Grade 1 (38 participants) and Grade 2 (46 participants) took part, alongside 23 students from Grade 3, 15 from Grade 4, and 10 from Grade 5. Working in their Art Studio and classrooms across two art periods throughout July, students built fundamental visual skills, such as composition, color selection, and visual storytelling, to express innovative ideas for a waste-free world.

For older students, the focus shifted toward literary and photographic expression. Grade 6 to 8 students engaged in an Essay Writing Competition supervised by Ms. Megha Jha from the English Department, tackling the evocative theme "If Earth Could Speak—Our Responsibility." Meanwhile, nine senior students from Grades 9 to 12 participated in the Photography Competition under Ms. Selvi Ramesh, capturing thought-provoking imagery around the theme "The Human Footprint on Nature."

Beyond artistic skill development, the event anchored itself in core educational frameworks, aligning with 9GEMS (Gem 3: Visual & Performing Arts, Gem 5: Innovation & Creativity, Gem 7: Universal Values & Ethics, Gem 9: Skill Development) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production). By inspiring students to communicate real-world solutions through art, writing, and photography, the Eco Showdown successfully empowered the school community to embrace responsible citizenship and champion a sustainable future.
