The GIIS KL Nikon Photography Club recently brought the world of professional visual arts straight to campus by organizing an engaging portrait photography workshop for its members. Held at the school auditorium, the session featured renowned event and lifestyle photographer Ms. Varshini Raghavan, who provided CBSE and Cambridge students with a unique opportunity to connect classroom concepts with real-world creative industries. The event was seamlessly coordinated by CCA Coordinator Ms. Arivuselvi, alongside club teacher-in-charge Ms. Nidhi Jain and Ms. Cindy Yegerova, ensuring a memorable and enriching experience for all participants.
The workshop was carefully structured to foster both artistic creativity and technical proficiency. Ms. Raghavan introduced the budding photographers to the foundational elements of portraiture, placing a strong emphasis on the strategic use of natural lighting to create mood, depth, and character in an image. She demonstrated how varying camera angles can entirely redefine facial features and elevate a composition from a simple snapshot to a compelling narrative. Beyond the artistic framing, students delved into the mechanics of their equipment, mastering technical aspects such as exposure settings and shutter speed to control how a camera captures light and movement.
A particularly captivating segment of the session focused on the concept of leading lines, teaching students how to intentionally guide a viewer's eye through a photograph to create balanced, visually appealing compositions. The learning extended into modern post-production as well, with an introduction to the fundamentals of digital photo editing using Adobe Photoshop. Under Ms. Raghavan’s guidance, students explored simple, practical techniques to enhance their images while carefully maintaining a clean, natural look.
Beyond developing practical skill sets, the workshop strongly reflected a commitment to global educational standards by aligning with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By delivering experiential, skill-based learning that champions critical thinking and technical literacy, the initiative supported SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). Furthermore, featuring a highly accomplished female professional in a competitive field served as a powerful inspiration for students, particularly young girls, to confidently pursue leadership roles and creative careers in media and visual arts, directly supporting SDG 5 (Gender Equality). By opening doors to the vast professional potential of the creative industries, the session also contributed to the vision of SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
The atmosphere in the auditorium was vibrant and highly interactive. Students did not just listen; they actively experimented with their cameras, tested newly learned angles, and sought personalized feedback from the guest speaker. By the end of the hour, the workshop had achieved its true purpose: inspiring a new generation of photographers to observe their everyday surroundings through a more creative lens and developing a profound, lifelong appreciation for the visual arts.
